Sand Point Beach
A popular spot for sunbathing and seeing amazing sunsets over Munising Bay, Sand Point Beach is known for its pink sand from crushed sandstone and views of Grand Island. This is the perfect place to take a dip in the lake and walk along the shoreline with your best pal.
Located just two miles to the east of downtown Munising, this 50-foot waterfall is easily accessible. To get to it, park and take a short stroll on a paved trail alongside Munising Creek. This will lead you to the central platform where you can view the breathtaking falls. In addition, there are two sets of stairs that will take you to elevated platforms.
Miners Castle, Beach, and Falls
The Pictured Rocks park is home to one of its most well-known landmarks, Miners Castle, which has been shaped by natural forces such as erosion, weather, and the power of Lake Superior. This intriguing rock formation can be easily viewed by people of all abilities, as there are paved trails leading to the overlook that make it easily accessible.
Au Sable Lighthouse
Lighthouses have always held an air of both intimidation and enchantment, and the Au Sable Light Station is no exception. Erected in the 1800s, this magnificent 86-foot structure is located approximately 12 miles west of Grand Marais and is surrounded by towering pines and birch trees. A 1.5-mile pathway leads to the lighthouse, and tours are offered throughout the late summer and autumn months, subject to staffing availability. However, dogs are only permitted on the grounds, not inside the buildings.
Pictured Rocks Cruises: Onsite Kennels
Although your furry friends are not allowed on board, Pictured Rocks Cruises offers complimentary kennels for the duration of the cruise, which have been recently renovated and are now climate controlled.
The kennels, which are located at the office and gift shop, are equipped with sliding locks, but you are welcome to bring your own padlock or purchase a padlock on site for additional security.
Pet-friendly Camping at Pictured Rocks
Fortunately, for those who desire a camping experience at Pictured Rocks with their beloved pets, there are two campsites (Twelvemile Beach and Hurricane River campgrounds) in the park that permit leashed dogs. These sites are accessible by car and must be reserved ahead of time.
Sable Falls tumbles 75 feet over a cascading slope of sandstone formations on its way to Lake Superior. Although the trail from the parking area to the staircase is a short walk, the best viewing is from the bottom of a long staircase of 168 steps. The trail continues past the falls for a short walk to a beautiful rock beach which your dog will love.
