Lighthouses have always held an air of both intimidation and enchantment, and the Au Sable Light Station is no exception. Erected in the 1800s, this magnificent 86-foot structure is located approximately 12 miles west of Grand Marais and is surrounded by towering pines and birch trees. A 1.5-mile pathway leads to the lighthouse, and tours are offered throughout the late summer and autumn months, subject to staffing availability. However, dogs are only permitted on the grounds, not inside the buildings.
